Some things we hold by choice. Others become part of us over time.

The Weight of Holding explores the emotional weight of connection: the people we care for, the memories we keep and the responsibilities that become part of us. These can give our lives meaning while asking something of us in return.

The vessel’s broad body narrows towards a small opening, suggesting an inner life larger than what is revealed. It evokes the feelings we contain—the love, worry, hope and grief that can exist together, often unseen.

A handmade ceramic chain falls from its neck. Each link holds the next, creating a connection that depends on every part. Although a chain suggests strength, these links are made from fragile clay. Their vulnerability reflects the care relationships require and the tension between holding someone close and allowing them freedom.

Layers of oxides, underglazes and glazes create a dark, metallic surface. Uneven textures and shifting reflections invite closer attention, echoing the way a person’s history reveals itself gradually. The marks remain visible, becoming part of the work’s character.

Beneath the vessel sits a hand-carved kerbstone. Usually passed without a thought, this ordinary material becomes the foundation of the work. Something once at the edge is brought into focus and given the task of supporting something fragile.

The kerbstone speaks to the support we can take for granted: the person who stays steady, the familiar place we return to, the quiet acts of care that help us through difficult days. Its weight gives the vessel grounding. Its transformation through carving suggests that a previous purpose does not have to define what something can become.

Together, the vessel, chain and stone ask us to consider both sides of holding: what we carry for others, and what allows us to feel held ourselves.

Handbuilt by Randeep Kaur in London, The Weight of Holding offers space for the collector’s own memories and connections—to recognise something of their life within its form.
